If, like many musicians, you're worried about having your music PC connected to the Internet, a network can also provide a little more security. One computer can be net-enabled and stuffed to the gills with firewall, anti-virus and anti-spyware utilities, so that you can deal with emails, visit the SOS forums and download application updates. Any other computers on the network need only be active when you're actually making music or want to transfer music updates across via the network. For even more security, you could use interchangeable hard-drive caddies on the music PC, so that the one containing your Windows music partition is never plugged in while the Internet machine is on-line and exposed to virus attacks.

One of the simplest is Xlutop's Chainer (www.xlutop.com), which allows you to stream up to 10 chains of VST instruments and plug-ins. The demo version is a tiny 245K download and the full version costs just $60. Dsound's RT Player Pro (www.dsound1.com) supports up to 24 VST plug-ins and Instruments and multiple MIDI inputs, and it includes 13 effects, for around 150 Euros, but doesn't have a demo version (although M Audio interface owners can download the simpler OEM RT Player Express version for free.

Steinberg V-Stack 1.2 Download

Steinberg's V-Stack (www.steinberg.de) is only available as a 10.4MB download direct from the Steinberg web site but is discussed in more detail later on, since it also offers internal synchronisation with other Steinberg applications. Finally, there are also a few free host applications out there if you look hard enough, such as the 84K Simple Virtual Host from FXpansion (www.fxpansion.com/skunk/svh14.zip), and (possibly the most popular of all) the donationware Minihost from Toby Bear Productions (www.tobybear.de/p_minihost.html).

Prices start at $129 (about 70) for the most typical two-computer setup ($169 for the Platinum version), and jump to $199 ($269) for a bundle for four computers and $299 ($369) for eight. A 1.4MB demo version that runs for 14 days is also available to download. I had no problems installing and getting the Standard version running. So that it can be configured to suit your setup, the MIDI In and Out can be enabled independently for each of the available ports (labelled Netport1 to Netport16) and the MIDI In can be configured to receive data from any host PC, or only from a specific IP Address (see 'Technical Terminology' box). The MIDI Outs must always be set to point to the recipient PC's IP Address. There's a handy MIDI monitor that displays MIDIoverLAN activity, and overall I found that this utility worked faultlessly on my PCs.

If you've already got one of these applications installed on all the computers in your proposed network there's nothing else to buy. However, If not, Steinberg's V-Stack is a cheap way to expand your VST System Link studio. It's a simple host application that lets you run up to 16 VST Instruments with up to five VST or DX insert effects and eight send effects per channel, as well as providing four-band EQ and up to four subgroups in its integral mixer. It can also be used as a simple stand-alone host to run VST Instruments in a live setup, and provides layering, transpose and split functions. Version 1.2 runs on both Mac and PC and you can buy and download it directly from the Steinberg web site for just 50 Euros. V-Stack certainly provides a familiar interface and I had no problems using it as a stand-alone host.

Alternative remote control software includes VNC (Virtual Network Computing), a free download from www.realvnc.com. Like Remote Desktop, it allows you to view and interact with a remote server computer using a simple 'viewer' program running on another computer anywhere on the Internet. However, if you want to be able to send your MIDI and audio tracks in both directions in a fairly transparent way, you'll need something a little more sophisticated.

In 1998, Rocket Network Inc created a way for musicians to share their files, which was taken up by Steinberg at the beginning of 1999. A new 'Rocket' button appeared in Cubase VST that let users post tracks to the Rocket Network Central Server so that they could be shared, within minutes, with other musicians collaborating on that project. Logic Audio and Pro Tools users later got in on the act as well, and the files could be sent in any format, including WAV, MP3 and MIDI. Rocket Network's Central Server held the most up-to-date arrangement of each project, which was downloaded to each musician as they entered a 'session'.

Still, as some products depart, others arrive, with Steinberg (www.steinberg.net) bringing VStack to the Mac OS X platform with the newly released version 1.2. VStack is a host for running VST instruments on another system in addition to your main sequencing computer, and offers support for both VST System Link and Rewire. VStack offers a full onscreen mixer with insert and send effects, along with four EQs per channel, and supports master keyboard-type functionality for the layering of multiple VST Instruments on the same MIDI channel, with transpose and split capability. It's available as a direct download from Steinberg's web site, at 49.90 Euros.

The go get commandnow has a -t flag that causes it to download the dependenciesof the tests run by the package, not just those of the package itself.By default, as before, dependencies of the tests are not downloaded.

In order to update all of your Plugin Alliance products to the latest versions, please download our Installation Manager and use it to download and install the latest versions of our plugins. Doing this will overwrite all of the versions that you currently have installed on your system with the latest versions.

Unfortunately, there still isn't yet a way to auto-detect whether or not your plugins are currently up to date, but of course, it won't hurt to update a plugin that's already up to date. The Installation Manager also doesn't yet connect to your account, so you still have to go through and manually select all the plugins you own, but it is easier than downloading individual installers.

The asterisk that you see next to some plugins in our Installation Manager means that there is an AAX DSP version included. The simplest way to update all of your plugins is to select all of them, click download, then install and this will overwrite the existing versions.

Most likely the installer was corrupted in some way during the download. Please delete the erroneous copy from your computer, re-download the installer from our website and try installing again. You may need to troubleshoot your internet connection.

If the activation window doesn't open automatically in your DAW, open a plugin and click on the "Activation Required" text or the key icon on the bottom right side of the plugin window. Next, click the "I'm offline" button and "Save to file" to save your machine ID. Then open a web browser, go to Manage Devices, click "choose file," and upload that machine ID file you just saved. Click "activate." Then click "Download license file," and you'll get a file named "pa.license." Go back to the activation window in your DAW and click on the "open license" button in the plugin window, and select the license file you just downloaded. Then click "activate."Here is a link to our ACTIVATION MANUAL.

To download the current version, just go to Manage Registered Plugins and select your plugin and scroll down to the download section. Please be sure to download the current version, which is listed on the left.

The manuals are installed automatically when you run the plugin installer. You can search for them o nyour machine by typing in the plugin name followed by the word 'manual' and it should be installed. If that is not the case, you can download the manuals from your Manage Registered Plugins page.

If you are trying to open the manual for either of these plugins, you will not be able to find them as unfortunately, they are not available as they were never created. However, we encourage users to download a fully functional 14 day trial and experiment with the intuitive and user-friendly interfaces of the plugins. Also, please search for YouTube videos if you are looking for more detailed info for the plugins.

After you are finished with the installation, open the plugin in your DAW. The plugin will display an "Activation needed" screen. Click it to start, then enter the email address and password you use to login into our website and the plugin will contact our server and download your license file to your computer.

You can also use our Offline Activation method by downloading a license file on a computer that has an internet connection and then transferring that file to an offline studio computer if needed. A third way of authorizing your Plugin Alliance plugins is by using a USB drive. For more information about all three methods, please consult our activation manual. 2ff7e9595c
